Batless was born in 1840, in Highland County, Ohio. Came to Doniphan County, Kansas in 1857. His business was in General Merchandising. He was County Sheriff, in 1868-1869. He was also a Civil War veteran, being in the Kansas Seventh Cavalry, Co. C., First Lieutenant; Residence Highland; Mustered in July 23, 1863. Promoted First Lieutenant October 31, 1863.,
