On the county map Fremont can be found in township 17-south and range 4-west.  On the township map Fremont can be found in section 29.

 

Names changes.

 

Fremont was formally known by two other names the first being Smoky Hill then in 1894 it was changed to Somky.  both of this town were in Union township and sat in section 20.  Around 1895 the town moved about a mile south to section 29, around this time the town changed it's name to Fremont.

 

Post Office History.

 

Smoky Hill post office open January 3, 1873, and ran to September 27, 1894, first postmaster was August Roth, name changed to Smoky.  Smoky post office open September 27, 1894 and ran to January 23, 1895, name changed to fremont.  Fremont post office open January 23, 1895 and ran to January 30, 1932.

CHARLES J. STROMQUIST, farmer and stock-raiser, Section 28, P. O. Smoky Hill. He came to Kansas December 18, 1869. Worked two years at the carpenters' trade, then began farming. He was born in Sweden, September 27, 1842. Worked mostly on the farm, but also learned the carpenters' and millers' trades. Came to America in 1867. Located at Chicago, where he worked at the carpenter's trade until he came to Kansas. Was married in 1873, to Miss Johanna M. Isakson, a native of Sweden, born July 31, 1849. They have four children - Agnes E., Anna W., Charles E., Francis J. L. (deceased) and Elvira S. He has served as Trustee of Sharp's Creek for two years, and Union Township two and one-half years, and a member of the School Board for several years. He is a member of the Freemount Swedish Lutheran Church, and has been trustee and cashier of the same for the past ten years. He has served as Justice of the Peace two years; is also one of the directors of the Bethania Academy at Lindsborg, Kan.

Fremont Kansas, 1912.

 

Fremont, a post-hamlet of McPherson county, is located in the north-western part, on a branch line of the Missouri Pacific R. R. about 13 miles northwest of McPherson, the county seat. It had a population of  15 according to the census of 1910. The nearest important town is Lindsborg, about 7 miles east.
